In Math we will be covering chapter 4-6. Topics include regrouping numbers with both addition and subtraction. This used to be called "carrying" or "borrowing".

In Religion we will continue to study the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will be learning the Form for Confession as we prepare to make our First Penance. We'll also be learning about Advent and Christmas.

Soon we will begin learning to write in cursive.

Curriculum

Grade 2

1st Trimester

Religion

Students learn their place in the kingdom of God as members of the human family and church community. They learn of God’s love and plan for each individual. The children learn about and participate in the Mass, sacraments, rosary, feasts of the church, Lent and Advent, service to others, and prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Math

Students will be exploring strategies for learning addition and subtraction. They will be using concrete manipulatives to develop skills in money, time, calendars, geometric shapes, measuring and multiplication concepts. Consistent strengthening of basic skills is ongoing throughout a variety of activities.

Integrated Language Arts

Reading, writing, spelling, phonics, grammar, and writing mechanics are taught in concert, not in isolation in the integrated approach. These skills are developed and extended through the use of the anthology and authentic literature. Students develop skills, while being nurtured to develop an enthusiasm and interest in using these skills. Reading logs, literature units, author focus units enhance the ILA program.

Children will learn and consistently use the steps in the writing process. They will compose different forms of writing such as paragraphs, persuasion, letter writing, poetry and book reports.

Social Studies

Students will learn about communities, famous Americans, map skills and integrated topics throughout the curriculum. Students also utilize Scholastic News Magazine as a resource for Social Studies and Science.

Science

There are many themes taught in science that are integrated into the language arts curriculum. They include: plant life, seasons, nutrition, fossils, seashells and sea animals, life cycles of the butterfly, frog, insects, spiders and chicks.
