Integrated Language Arts

This is a very large block of our curriculum. It includes all the skills for effective learning, thinking and communicating. In ILA we learn reading skills, composing/writing skills, spelling, penmanship, grammar, word study, and grade appropriate vocabulary. A variety of literature genres are used both for reading and writing styles. We also read some class novels during the year.

Students are encouraged to read in class whenever there is time, therefore they should have a chapter book in their possession at all times in class. A book log is also kept in each student’s portfolio, as a record of what they have read.

A writing portfolio which includes samples of student writing in each grade is kept and passed on through the years, to show how the student had progressed in his or her writing skills.

There are six themes in our two Anthologies. Two themes will be covered in each trimester.

Science

Third grade alternates the study of science, social studies and writing. One teacher teaches science for about 3 weeks while the other teaches social studies and writing. At the end of the period classes switch so whoever had science will now have social studies, etc.

September: The Earth, and Scientific Method

October: Geology, Forces and Motion

November: Human Body, living things, and adaptations.

Social Studies

Communities- How they are alike and different.

Maps and Globes- directions, maps, key continents and hemispheres.

The U.S. government and its branches- legislative, executive and judicial.

Election- the U.S. President and the voting Process.
