Curriculum
Grade 5
1st Trimester
Religion
– In the beginning of the school year the
religion will evolve around our Bible roots.
The fifth grade will learn and practice all the
ins and outs of finding and reading Bible
verses. The children will learn about the
epistles, and our Jewish ancestry, creation and
God’s Gift of Love, Jesus, a sacrament.
Math –
The fifth grade will begin with place value and
number sense. We will then review the 4
operations and learning the different
properties. Word problems will continue to be
an integral part of this course study.
Integrated Language Arts - The Language Arts curriculum focuses on spelling,
grammar, and vocabulary. The students will
continue to use Wordly Wise to enhance their
knowledge of vocabulary. Subjects, predicates,
compound words, nouns, verbs, conjunctions and
kinds of sentences will be studied. They will
also complete daily edits each week.
Reading
– The children will continue to use their basal
readers organized by themes. The objectives in
the first 2 themes include predicting,
inferring, sequencing of events, categorizing
and classifying, evaluating, summarizing,
clarifying, main idea and supporting details.
Writing –
The goal of our writing workshop is to hone in
on writing paragraphs that follow particular
formats. Focusing on sentence structure and
parts of speech, the students will form strong
paragraphs. They will complete 2 of the 6
writing pieces required in the guidelines.
Science –
The fifth grade science guidelines include
strong emphasis on the scientific process: thus
the students will focus on questioning,
observing, analyzing and hypothesizing. Earth
science is the topic for the first trimester.
Our focus will be the solar system and
astrology.
Social Studies – The Western Hemisphere is our focus this year. The first trimester
will be devoted to understanding the geography-
where we are in the global community. We will
study longitude & latitude and we will begin the
long up hill climb learning the states &
capitals and regions.
